From oak board to your living room: how a piece of furniture is made in our workshop

Planches de chêne massif sélectionnées dans l'atelier E&F Déco à Mollégès

Our story began in 2019 in Los Angeles, in a small workshop where we restored furniture. Our clients soon asked us to build their own pieces. After Florida, we moved the workshop to Mollégès, in Provence, France. To this day, every piece goes through our hands at every step. Here is how it comes to life.

1. Selecting the wood

It all starts with choosing the solid oak boards. We pick them one by one: the grain, the color, the knots. This is when we decide which board will become the tabletop, and which will be used for the legs or sides. Beautiful furniture starts with good wood.

2. Cutting

The boards are then flattened, planed and cut to size. Precision is essential: a few millimeters off and the joints would no longer be perfect.

3. Joinery

For a tabletop, the boards are glued side by side, alternating the direction of the growth rings so the wood stays stable over time. The legs and frame are then firmly assembled: solid oak furniture should last for generations.

4. Sanding

This is the longest step, and the one you feel. We sand in several passes with finer and finer grits until the surface is silky smooth.

5. Oil finish

We finish our pieces with oil, which soaks into the wood, protects it and brings out the grain while keeping a natural look. To keep your furniture beautiful for years, read our wood care tips.

6. Packing and delivery

Every piece is carefully packed to travel safely to France, Europe or the United States. For US orders, import duties are included in our prices.

No mass production

At E&F Déco there is no production line: just solid wood worked with care, and one-of-a-kind pieces. Have a specific project in mind? We also build custom pieces, indoors and outdoors. Tell us about your project.
